Lake George Hikes  – The Experience of a Lifetime

The Lake George Area is known for its hiking and walking trails. You’ll find numerous spots to take in the breathtaking views of the lake as you stroll through different trails. Rest assured, you will have many opportunities to peek at its shimmering water and the mountain peaks in its surroundings. It isn’t without a reason that this lake has earned the nickname “Queen of American Lakes.” As the biggest lake in the Adirondacks, it’s the perfect destination for a hiking getaway. Here’s more on everything you can experience on your Lake George hikes.

Pilot Knob Preserve

This has to be one of the best features of your Lake George hikes. Pilot Knob Preserve is only a 15-minute drive from the lake. Here, you’ll be stunned to see the trail studded with tree roots and rocks. There are also big flat rocks and a number of short staircases to help hikers go up the steeper corners.

Overall, the trail is well-maintained and is covered with colorful wildflowers. As soon as you reach the summit of the Pilot Knob, you’ll reach Gazebo, a picture-perfect site to rest, capture some pictures and have some lunch.

Shelving Rock Falls

If you’re looking for waterfalls near the lake, you’ll be happy to find out that the most beautiful one is only a short hike away. As you walk along a wooded creek and finally land here, you’ll know why this gorgeous waterfall is combined with the Shelving Rock Mountain trail.

It’s almost as if nature chose this spot for all its experiments. You can end your hike as soon as you get to the top of the falls, or you can continue till you reach the bottom of the falls and the Lake George shoreline.

Prospect Mountain

Speaking of Lake George hikes, we can’t possibly keep this one out of the list. There are two ways to reach the summit of Prospect Mountain, which is situated on the western end of the lake. The first option is to hike. Weekends attract a number of people to the trailhead that starts right in Lake George. However, the rocky and steep trail is quite difficult to hike on. It is recommended that you keep children away from it. On average, a round-trip hike shouldn’t be more than 2.8 miles long.

The second option is to drive. While it is an easy way out, it’s up to you to decide how much more exhaustion you can bear. The beautiful tree-lined road of Veteran’s Memorial Highway will surely make the adventure worthwhile. While you hike here, you will also be able to see the remnants of the Cable Incline Railway built in the late 19th century.

Chester Challenge Trails

Looking for a bit of a challenge? Head over to Chester Challenge, which is made up of around 11 trails in the region. The best part about hiking here is that you’ll have hikes of all sorts. From beginner to moderately difficult, there will be something for everybody. If you end up completing the challenge of all hikes, make sure to visit the Chester Town Hall to receive your completion pin.

Warren County Bike Trail

Did you know that this rail trail was the first in New York State? Starting from Glens Falls, this bikeway will take you to the southern side of Lake George, where it ends close to Million Dollar Beach. While you’re on the trail, you’ll enjoy marvelous views of Glen Lake and Magic Forest.

The only downside is that dogs aren’t allowed here, which means you won’t be able to bring a pet along. Other than that, it’s open for everyone, whether they’re on foot or a bike. The cherry on top, the trail will take you by ice cream parlors such as Cooper’s Cave.

5 Tips for Your Lake George Hikes

  • Make sure to wear good hiking boots since a huge chunk of the terrain is filled with roots and rocks. Wearing steady footwear like boots ensures that your ankles are safe, no matter the type of trail.
  • While hiking poles aren’t a necessity, they can help you navigate better, especially on steeper surfaces.
  • Carry waste bags with you during the hike as you will end up accumulating a lot of trash. Most importantly, carry a bug spray to save yourself from ticks and mosquitos.
