Golfing at Oak Hill Country Club

An Exclusive Place with a Rich History

One of the best, fairest, and toughest championship golf courses of all time – this is how most golf lovers describe Oak Hill.

The golf course at Oak Hills was officially incorporated in 1991, when golfing was a relatively new sport in America. Originally a 9-hole golf course with just 137 members, the course soon became a hub of social activity and enjoyment in Rochester, New York.

With the increasing popularity of golf, the members agreed to move the clubhouse to Pittsford in 1924. The new location had enough space for two 18-hole courses. Donald Ross, one of the best golf architects of all time, was hired to handle the new design.

In 1926, Oak Hill Country Club’s new golf courses at Pittsford were finally completed. However, the land was still barren, like the original site at Rochester. The soil was exhausted from years of farming, and the scarcity of vegetation made the courses look dull. This is where Dr John R Williams came into the picture!

Dr John R William, a renowned retired physician, had taken up botany and horticulture as a hobby. He decided to transform the entire Oak Hill Country Club landscape with majestic trees and plants. The Oak Hill Country Club is now a landmark featuring thousands and thousands of oaks, maples, elms, and evergreens.

Oak Hill Country Club is a combination of Donald Ross’s architectural expertise and Dr William’s horticulture skills. It is the only club to have hosted all six rotating men’s championships, including:

  • Three PGA championships
  • Three U.S. Opens
  • The U.S. Senior Open
  • The Ryder Cup
  • Two Senior PGA Championships

The women’s association at Oak Hill Country Club provides two membership categories: social and sports. The Sports membership includes themed invitations for 9-hole and 18-hole players, and the Social membership consists of garden tours.

Golfing at Oak Hill Country Club

The Oak Hill Country Club has two expansive golf courses: The East and the West Course. They both feature mesmeric views, multiple tees for all levels of players, and risk/reward options at every hole.

●       East Course

East course is considered more challenging and apt for hosting top golf events. Since it’s built around the east branch of Allen Creek, 9 of the 18 holes pose a water hazard.

The first hole, ‘Challenge,’ features a very difficult drive. The first shot warms up your driving skills and sets the tone for the rest of the game. The dangers of out-of-bounds to the right and new bunkers on the left, along with a series of hummocks in the left rough, increase the excitement level right from the start.

This course features eleven four-par, two five-par, and four three-par holes. The second last hole (Hole 17) allows you to aim for a four or a five par. The last hole provides a wild finish to the round, requiring a long, precise drive over new fairway bunkers. It tests players attempting to cut the dogleg’s corner.

●       West Course

The first hole of the West Course gives you an excellent start to the game. Don’t drive through the fairway on the left side because the trees will block your second shot. A short iron strategy to a two-level green is the best way to score well on the first hole.

There are a total of 11 four-par, four three-par, and three five-par holes at the West Course. The last hole is a beautiful four-part heading back to the clubhouse. You can easily reach the green with a good drive and a long iron second shot.
